This article is for instructors and teachers using Achieve courses including Read & Practice. Read on to find out how to create a course by copying an existing course.
When to copy a course vs. create a section
If you are using a Section Manager, you can create new sections to effectively copy your Section Manager. However, this is not recommended if you used this Section Manager in a previous term. We recommend that you copy the Section Manager itself, giving the copy a new name to reflect the new term, then create sections under the new Section Manager.
Note: If you create a copy of a Restricted Access section of a Section Manager by following the instructions below, the copy will no longer be linked to the Section Manager. If you want a new course that is connected to the Section Manager, the creator of the Section Manager will need to create a new section for you.
If you've previously integrated Achieve with an LMS
There are separate course copy instructions for your LMS that you'll need to follow:
- Duplicating a Blackboard course integrated with Achieve
- Duplicating a Canvas course integrated with Achieve
- Duplicating a Moodle course integrated with Achieve
- Duplicating a D2L/Brightspace course integrated with Achieve
Go to your Achieve course list
This is the page you land on when you first log in to Achieve. If you are already logged in and in your course, you can click the Achieve logo in the upper left-hand corner to return to the course page.
Click the three dots icon
After logging in to Achieve, click the three dots icon for the course you want to copy.
Choose "Copy Course"
Select whether you need a Single Course or a Section Manager
This article covers the creation of a Single Course. For details on how to set up a Section Manager, see Create and manage a Section Manager. After making your selection, click Next: Set course info.
Enter "Course Info"
The Course Info section requires you to enter the Course Name, include a short Course Code, and select your Institution.
We recommend the following convention for your course title to make it easy for students to find and register into the correct section: Course Number- Section Number- Term Year- Instructor/Teacher Name. For example: Econ 101- Section 4- Fall 2019- Treadway.
Enter "Course Details"
Enter the Term, Term Start Date, and Term End Date. Students will only be allowed access to your course during the time period between the start and end dates. You can allow your students to continue to access the course after the end date by clicking the toggle for Allow student to access the course after Term End Date.
Note: You may want to extend your course dates an extra day or two, or toggle on allowing access after the end date to allow students some wiggle room for enrolling or finishing course work.
You can also select the day of the week you'd like to Start Week On in your course. Assignments are presented in the Assignments view of your course in buckets by week.
Class Meeting Days and Times
For Class Meeting Days, check the boxes for the days your course meets, then enter the Class Meeting Time. If you have different meeting times on different days, click + Add additional meeting time(s).
Assignment Dates
This section allows you to adjust your assignment due dates from the copied course. The first option, Adjust dates based on this first assignment due date, will adjust your due dates (and any custom visibility dates set) in the course copy to have the same cadence as the original course, but with a new start date. You can use this feature to adjust your due dates term to term or for sections that meet on different days.
For example, if you taught a course in the fall that had its first assignment due Aug 8, 2023 (a Tuesday), and you wanted to copy it to create a course for the spring term, you could select a new first date for your spring course of Jan 9, 2023 (also a Tuesday) and all assignments in the course copy would then be due on the same day of the week but in the new term instead of the old one.
It's recommended to select a first date that is the same day of the week as the first assignment due date in the original course, in order to avoid assignments being due on an unexpected day of the week, such as a weekend. However, you can still easily shift due dates to a new day of the week if, say, all of your assignments are due on the same day of the week.
If you would rather copy the due dates exactly from the original course, or not copy any due dates at all, those options are also provided.
LMS Integration
If you're planning on integrating your Achieve course with an LMS, make sure to toggle on Link Achieve to my LMS. This will trigger prompts within your Achieve course to assist you with the integration process. In the case of Achieve/Canvas integration, it will also simplify the integration process from within Achieve! (This feature is coming soon for other LMSs.)
Student Access
This toggle allows you to give students access to the course after the term end date.
Save changes
When you're done entering your course details, click Next: Create Course at the bottom right of your screen. You'll receive a confirmation message that your course creation was successful, and you'll be automatically dropped into your new course.
